Historical Day at Abba Bishoy Monastery

Day of Announcing the Altar Lot
Of Pope Tawadros II
By: Hegomen Fr. Afrayem, Anba Bishoy

The man of God who loves God, the church, and homeland …
He is the man of God, the wise administrator, the lover of Egypt & its soil, who seeks stabilization of the spiritual values in the souls of the Church’s children, and who is so close to the hearts of kids and youngsters, men and women, old and young, whether Christians or Muslims. He is the man of service and giving who had learned from H.G. Bishop Bakhomios, as he said today, since he was in the first year of the university about 40 years ago. In the monastery, he was a disciple to H.G. Bishop Serabamon, the Bishop of Anba Bishoy Monastery. Also he was learned in all the wisdom of the departed pope, H.H. Pope Shenouda III. He studied in depth the Holy Bible, as well as the history and the faith of his Church, and issued many books about the Christian Creed in a simple, concentrated, and spiritual manner. He is well known as the man who is seeking the church unification, working for the national unity, and servicing in the spirit of youth. He is the pharmacist who knows how to offer a medicine to every illness in a spiritual and scientific way. We all pray that God help him to offer the medication for the sectarian hostility which is seen on the Egyptian arena, to present practical solutions to treat illness, poverty, and ignorance, to strive for restoring the interior house and to build the institutions of the Church on basis of transparence, collaboration and love between the clergymen and congregation, and among the children, young, and old people; as well as to care for his flock and seek the salvation of everyone.
His Biography, superiority and distinction..
He is the man of God who loved the church since his childhood, and was a servant in Sunday schools starting from his youth. He had come from Abba Bishoy Monastery, and then the Bishopric of Behaira, Matrouh and the five western cities, to sit on the seat of St Mark, and to be the successor of the late Pope Shenouda. It may come by chance that this day of the Altar Lot coincides with his 60th birthday, as H.G. Bishop Tawadros was born on November 4, 1952, in Damanhour, Governorate of Behaira. He got the bachelor of pharmacy from Alexandria University in 1975; the bachelor degree of the Clerical College; the colleagueship of the World Health in England; as well as he got the master’s degree in management from Singapore.
On August 20, 1986, Bishop Tawadros arrived to Anba Bishoy Monastery at Wadi El-Natroun seeking monasticism, where he was ordained as a priest on December 23, 1989. Then he moved to service the youth in Behaira Bishopric with the bishop H.G. Bishop Bakhomios, and he got the position of bishop on June 15, 1997, to continue his mission which has been crowned by choosing him through the Altar Lot as the Pope and Patriarch of the Coptic Church, to follow H.H. Pope Shenouda III.
Bishop Tawadros had gained the second position of the highest three percentage of votes with respect to the total votes in the Papal elections. Then the heaven has chosen him in the Altar Lot, which was held in the morning of Sunday November 4, 2012, to be the new Pope whom the Copts had long waited him during the last eight months, and he became the successor of the departed H.H. Pope Shenouda III.
His secular name is “Wagih Sobhy” and he was born on November 4, 1952, in a family includes him, a brother and two sisters. His father was working as engineer in the Surveying Authority. After he has been graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy and before monasticism, he worked as manager of a pharmaceutical factory in Damanhour owned by the Ministry of Health. He is known for his good relationship with all people in the governorate, Christians and Muslims both. His most prominent comment was what he said about H.H. Pope Shenouda: “I loved the name which was given to Pope Shenouda as a safety valve for the country.” He is always proud with being an Egyptian, and with Egypt, its history and its deep-rooted church. He is known for his humility, tenderness, systematic thinking, and deep love for the Church Education, as well as his tolerance and working hard for the sake of national unity in Egypt. He was called the “Candidate of Management” as he said: “We should pay attention for the Church Education classes starting from the childhood, and to make the classes of preparing servants a priority, because the service is going to create  a new renaissance within the churches, whether in Egypt or in the countries of emigration.” He spoke today about unification, rearranging the house internally, and strengthening the relationship between the youth and the church, especially after the 25th January revolution.
Memorable Day in Anba Bishoy Monastery
Once H.G. Bishop Bakhomios, the acting Pope, announced the Altar Lot which revealed the heavenly choice of Bishop Tawadros to be the Pope and the Patriarch 118 of the Coptic Church Popes, directly the joy pervaded, the church bells rang in the monastery, and the fathers flocked to the complex of the monastery monks to congratulate the one chosen by God, after they attended the Liturgy which ended at 6 am with His Holiness. Then they went in front of him with church hymns and crosses, and headed to the church of Abba Bishoy Monastery where he prayed there to thank God and asking for His help. The joy prevailed in Abba Bishoy Monastery as well as Shiheet wilderness and its monasteries. Thousands of people flocked to the Monastery to express their delight for that appropriate choice.
In his speech at Anba Bishoy Monastery today, Bishop Tawadros thanked God for His love. He praised Pope Shenouda III who had worked for the advancement of the church. Also he thanked H.G. Bishop Bakhomios the acting Pope, and H.G. Bishop Serabamon the head of Abba Bishoy Monastery, as well as the Nominations Committee, the Holy Synod of the Coptic Church, the clergymen, the Denomination Council, the Coptic Endowments Authority, all servants, and all Egyptian people. He asked for their prayers, cooperation, and standing together for raising Egypt and the Church. He added in his speech that the Egyptian Church presenting a remarkable model not only for the Egyptian society but for all churches of the world, since it represents harmony, cohesion, and order, all in wonderful love and considerable humility.
After the day of receiving the body of H.H. Pope Shenouda, Anba Bishoy Monastery turned again today to be a headquarters of the Church, and once more the focus of the media personnel, television, and press, but to wash away our sorrows and our tears by choosing a worthy successor to the best predecessor. Then His Holiness the new Pope visited the shrine of H.H. Pope Shenouda III, in faithfulness, love, and loyalty for the teacher of generations. All members of the Holy Synod flocked there to congratulate him, including H.G. Bishop Raphael who was a candidate with him for the position. They exchanged congratulations today in the guesthouse of the monastery in a Christian spirit, giving example and role model for true love. His Holiness was keen to stand for several hours to shake hands with thousands of well-wishers, and he was patient and kept smile all the time. Also he was eager to answer all media personnel, either television or press.
Bishop Tawadros indicated that after the departure of H.H. Pope Shenouda, some people thought that the Church will enter in conflicts and fronts, but the opposite was true as the spirit of love, collaboration, humility, and order dominated everyone.     H.G. Bishop Bakhomios the acting Pope had led this stage as a skillful maestro who managed this transitional period with all wisdom and competence.
We congratulate ourselves with the heavenly choice, and congratulate the children of our Church and the Egyptian people, whether in Egypt or abroad, for this appropriate choice. May God grants him wisdom, grace and strength to lead the church toward the safety harbor through collaboration, love, and diligent work for raising Egypt, acting for its peace, keeping its identity and history, and looking forward in faith and confident hope that God works with us.
